Proman has been actively developing the uptake of methanol as a lower-emission fuel to decarbonise a range of industrial and transport sectors, particularly the international shipping industry. Proving that the shipping industry can take proactive and immediate steps on the decarbonisation pathway, Proman and Stena Bulk formed joint venture Proman Stena Bulk in 2019 to own and operate long term time-chartered methanol-fuelled ships. Proman, one of the world's largest methanol producers, and Stena Bulk, one of the world’s leading tanker shipping companies, share expertise to lead the way to a more sustainable shipping sector. Stena Pro Patria and Stena Pro Marine, the partnership’s first two fully operational methanol-fuelled tankers made history recently by being the first vessels to bunker methanol in Ulsan, South Korea. The milestone demonstrated the widespread availability of methanol as a marine fuel given that South Korea does not produce methanol domestically. The fuel’s availability in Ulsan comes as a clear indicator of the growing and already widespread availability of methanol as marine fuel for owners and operators seeking to tackle shipping emissions. Both the Stena Pro Patria and Stena Pro Marine are 49,990 DWT IMOIIMeMAX dual-fuel mid-range (MR) tankers built at Guangzhou Shipyard International Co Ltd (GSI) in China. They are expected to consume 12,500 tonnes of methanol per annum. The use ofmethanol onboard virtually eliminates local pollutants including SOx and Particulate Matter (PM), cuts NOx emissions by 60% and reduces CO2 emissions by up to 15% on a tank to wake basis versus conventional marine fuels. Methanol is also biodegradable, making it far less damaging for the environment compared to conventional marine fuels. The increasing global uptake of methanol as a marine fuel is aided by its current availability across 120 ports worldwide, including the major global bunkering hubs of Singapore, Algeciras, Houston and Rotterdam. Meanwhile, other key locations such as the Port of Gotenburg and Rotterdamare adopting or developing new simple methanol bunkering guidelines. Production of ‘green’ methanol from sustainable sources such as waste, bio-mass or renewable energy is also growing and highly About Proman Proman is an integrated industrial group and global leader in natural gas derived products and services.
