The first round of Chile’s 2021 general election will take place on 21 November. Gabriel Boric, candidate for the leftist Apruebo Dignidad coalition took an early lead in polling, followed closely by José Antonio Kast from the right-wing Frente Social Cristiano, Sebastián Sichel, for the centre-right Chile Podemos Más coalition (formerly Chile Vamos, led by President Sebastián Piñera), and other candidates including Yasna Provoste from the Nuevo Pacto Social coalition.
This election comes after a period of significant social unrest in Chile in recent years; amidst the ongoing economic fallout of the Covid-19 pandemic; and at the midpoint of a process of major constitutional reform. All this leaves Chile in an uncertain position – with this election likely deciding whether its politics could take a turn to the left, or continue on their current path.
Canning House is pleased to host a discussion of the election’s first round results, looking ahead at what the results could mean for Chile.
