In the article, the author argues that Venezuela’s opposition must regain political relevance and momentum if they are to avoid becoming irrelevant in the unfolding events in the country, particularly following the capture of Nicolás Maduro and the consolidation of power by Delcy Rodríguez with U.S. support. The author's central thesis is that the opposition’s ability to influence Venezuela’s future hinges on three key strategies: unity, strategic confrontation and careful timing of María Corina Machado’s return. To support this argument, the author highlights several challenges and proposed solutions. Firstly, the opposition must reactivate the Democratic Unitary Platform in order to present a united front and align with the US strategy of stabilisation, recovery and eventual democratic transition. This unity is seen as essential for negotiating with both the Rodríguez administration and the White House. Secondly, the opposition is faced with the dilemma of whether to confront or cooperate with the Rodríguez administration and Trump. Some, such as the economist Ricardo Hausmann, advocate a more confrontational approach to restore Venezuelans’ rights; however, others warn that antagonising the US could backfire given Trump’s recognition of Rodríguez. According to the author, the most delicate issue is Machado’s return to Venezuela. While her return could galvanise the opposition, it risks provoking the regime, which has threatened to imprison her. Machado herself has emphasised the need for a 'harmonious and coordinated' return within the context of a broader national accord. The article also highlights the importance of releasing political prisoners and restoring civil liberties as key steps to regain public and international support.
Ultimately, the author suggests that the success of the opposition hinges on balancing these strategies while navigating a complex political landscape in which the U.S. prioritises stability and economic recovery over immediate democratic change.
