The Asian powerhouse accounted for more than a quarter of global consumption in 2022. It also consistently ranks among the top three consumers of oil, gas, coal, nuclear, hydro, wind and solar power. And it is a world leader in the production of electric vehicles (EVs), as well as the largest market for such cars. Beijing will continue to skillfully maneuver its relationships with various trade partners to secure its supplies. Brazil is among the top energy consumers by fuel type and share of world consumption.

Umstrittener Bergbauvertrag in Panama löst landesweit Massenproteste aus.
In den letzten Monaten hat Panama eine kontroverse Debatte über einen umstrittenen Bergbauvertrag mit tiefgreifenden Auswirkungen geführt. Der Vertrag, der vom panamaischen Kongress am 20. Oktober genehmigt wurde, gewährt Minería Panama, einer Tochtergesellschaft von First Quantum Minerals aus Kanada, das Recht, die größte Tagebaugrube für Kupfer in Mittelamerika über einen Zeitraum von 20 Jahren zu betreiben. Diese Grube erstreckt sich über etwa 12.000 Hektar in Donoso, Provinz Colón. Die Vereinbarung verspricht Panama erhebliche wirtschaftliche Gewinne und stellt sicher, dass jährlich mindestens 375 Millionen US-Dollar an Lizenzgebühren anfallen. Präsident Laurentino Cortizo betonte bei der Genehmigung des Vertrags am 24. Oktober: 'Wir haben die richtige Entscheidung getroffen, nicht die einfachste.' Dennoch brachen landesweite Proteste aus, die die öffentliche Unzufriedenheit sowohl mit der Vereinbarung selbst als auch mit der aktuellen Regierungspolitik widerspiegeln.

Technologien, Akteure und Szenarien bis 2040

In sketching the outline of a U.S. grand strategy in Latin America and the Caribbean, this report provides a framework within which to answer critical questions that remain unanswered in U.S. policymaking circles: which level of Chinese engagement the United States should permit versus what it should seek to curtail, as well as the necessarily circumscribed areas where U.S. competition should be resource-backed, well thought out, and creatively messaged. The report offers three categories for thinking through the terms of engagement with China in Latin America and the Caribbean: insulation, curtailment, and competition.
