Am 28. Juli 2024 finden in Venezuela Präsidentschaftswahlen statt, bei denen sich der seit 2013 regierende Staatschef Nicolás Maduro im Amt bestätigen lassen möchte. Mit María Corina Machado ist ihm eine Gegenkandidatin erwachsen, die zwar die Massen mobilisiert, aber nicht antreten darf. An ihrer Stelle tritt jetzt ein »Platzhalterkandidat« an, um sicherzustellen, dass oppositionelle Kräfte bei den Wahlen eine Alter­native haben. Die administrative Gängelung sowie die polizeiliche und justizielle Re­pression der Opposition dauert an, von fairen Wahlbedingungen kann nicht die Rede sein. Nun hat auch der Nationale Wahlrat (CNE) seine Einladung an die Europäische Union zurückgezogen, eine Beobachtermission zur Präsidentschaftswahl zu entsenden. Jen­seits des Wahlgangs dürfte auch der Umgang mit dem Wahlergebnis eine besondere Herausforderung nicht nur für die venezolanische Politik, sondern auch für die internationale Gemeinschaft bereithalten.

Die Sonnenbrille nehmen wir ab, um das minimalistische Werk von Pablo Griss und die Details der Installation von Sofía Salazar Rosales zu betrachten. Bei Mateo Cohen Monroyscheinen sich die Bilder zu schälen.

The awake Volcaones ist die erste Einzelausstellung von Sandra Vásquez de la Horra in einem US-Museum. Die chilenische Künstlerin, die erst kürzlich an der Biennale von Venedig teilgenommen hat und 2023 mit dem renommierten Käthe-Kollwitz-Preis ausgezeichnet wurde, präsentiert Gemälde, Zeichnungen und Drucke, die sich mit den Begriffen Fantasie, Lust, Angst und Vergnügen auseinandersetzen. Der Name der Ausstellung könnte eine Anspielung auf ihr Herkunftsland sein, welches nach Indonesien die zweithöchste vulkanische Aktivität der Erde aufweist.
